Which part of the plant is most potent?
Tip: Ask yourself when you harvest a plant for food or medicine, where is this plant putting its energy right now? Your answer will tell you which part of the plant is the most potent right now, for medicine or for nutritious food. For most plants in spring, the energy is in the leaves and stalk — until the flowers are about to open. Then there is a shift and the flowers pull the plant’s energy. In the Fall, as the plant is going dormant and getting ready to store up energy for winter survival, the plant pulls its energy or life force into its root system. So we harvest roots in the fall.
