Starwest Botanicals issued a voluntary recall for their Whole Elderberries, organic
Did you buy elderberries from StarWest Botanicals between June 2020 and October 2020? Out of an abundance of caution, they have issued a voluntary recall for one series of lot numbers — sold in silver mylar bags. These berries may be contaminated with salmonella.
Affected lot codes are: P88226, P88762, P88763. Lot code is printed just above the UPC on the front of the bag.
Example:
Note if you bought Starwest Botanicals between June 2020 and October 2020 and made elderberry syrup by boiling the berries in water, salmonella is killed at 165F. So boiling them for syrup will kill any salmonella and render it harmless, so don’t be alarmed, just be aware. Adding elderberries to steeped tea does not raise the temperature high enough to kill salmonella bacteria.
Starwest Botanical Elderberries are sold at Bulk Apothecary, North coast coop, iHerb, Amazon and several other distributors. (The affected lot numbers may or may not have been distributed by one of these suppliers.)
You can return any unused portions to your supplier for a refund.
